Are you a woman? Then you already know what it feels like to walk around in an endangered body. It’s bad enough that billboards and buses and magazine adverts force us to constantly confront what feels like our inherent wrongness: that we’re even allowed to take up space is not a given. That we are allowed to wear what we want to without being put at risk for rape is not a given.

But what should be a given, because it is enshrined as a right in the constitution of the United States, is our right to abortion. Roe v. Wade finally gave that to us in 1973. Countless thousands of women, before this Supreme Court decision, died because of unwanted pregnancies. Many thousands more were maimed by attempts to end their pregnancies themselves, or in the proverbial back alley. Republicans are shoving us back into that alley again, with a callousness that would be shocking if it hadn’t become so common since 2010, when their assault on choice began.

Do you know a woman? Then you should ask her how it feels to know that a group of (mostly white, mostly older men) have made it their business to legislate her vagina. If you are not a woman but you know a woman, or several women, just sit there for a moment. Close your eyes and imagine what it might feel like to have gotten accidentally pregnant, because of failed birth control. Imagine you already have several kids and can’t afford another. Or that your own body isn’t strong enough to maintain a pregnancy. And then imagine that your state Senator insists that a cold probe be inserted into your vagina, while you’re forced listen to right to life propaganda. Or that he is sneaking laws through his chambers in the cloak of night, ones that will close every single women’s health clinic in your state.

From the classic “legitimate rape” to #motorcyclevagina, the GOP have really given us some serious comedy gold in the last few years. But even though these morons send us into convulsions of hysteria every time they open their mouths, we don’t have time to laugh. Because this is urgent: it’s a “First they came for the Jews” moment, and we must act.

We already have our heroes. We #StandWithWendy (and well we should) and cheer Sandra Slamen. They rock. They are champions. We need more Wendys and Sandras. What we need even more is an army, and we need to start marching, stat. There is no time for you to sit around re-tweeting #feministarmy. Start building a real army of your real bodies and get it to Washington DC so they know that the whole world is watching, and women and their allies will not be silent.

You are not safe, even if you live in New York, or California, or Vermont. No matter how blue your state is, you are not safe, because they are coming for Roe V. Wade. They are coming with their sanctimonious, fundamentalist, Christ-soaked rhetoric, for your fundamental rights. They are coming because they are angry that this is no longer a white, Christian nation. They lost the election, but if we don’t stand up, we will lose our right to choose. And when we lose our right to choose, our bodies will be in more danger than they’ve ever been in before.
